Champions League Round of 16 Draw: Real Madrid will face RB Leipzig, Barcelona to take on Napoli

5 min read

The UEFA Champions League Round of 16 fixtures are set and locked in as the 16 teams that secured their spots past the group stages learned their fate this past Monday afternoon!

A total of four Spanish teams will be competing in this year’s Champions League Round of 16, more than any other country, as well as three German and Italian teams. So, lets get into the draws!

FC Barcelona vs Napoli

Let’s kick it off with this year’s most intriguing matchup: FC Barcelona against SSC Napoli.

It will for sure be a tough outing for LaLiga team as they haven’t been as consistent as the past years, suffering surprise defeats against FC Shakhtar Donetsk and Royal Antwerp FC. Napoli has also been somewhat struggling as they currently sit fifth in their league, 14 points behind the table leaders. However, they did finish second in their Champions League group, right behind Real Madrid.

The last time both teams clashed was during the 2022’s UEFA Europa League tournament, where Barcelona came out on top, defeating Napoli on aggregate of 3-5.

Man City vs Copenhagen and Bayern vs Lazio

It seems like Pep Guardiola’s team, Manchester City, and Thomas Tuchel’s FC Bayern Munich might have an easy route to the Round of 8 as both Clubs showed true dominance during their group stage runs. Notably, with City finishing their group with a perfect record after defeating FK Crvena Zvezda 2-3 in their Matchday 6 of the Champions League competition.

On the other hand, FC Copenhagen will be making their first appearance in the Champions League Round of 16 since the 2010-11 season while SS Lazio will match up with Bayern for the third and fourth time in its Club history. The last time both teams met, the German giants defeated Lazio 1-4 in the first leg of the Champions and 2-1 in the second leg.

Inter Milan vs Atlético Madrid

Diego Simeone’s Atlético Madrid and former Club and last season’s finalists, Inter Milan, are in for one of the most evenly-matched matches in this year’s competition. Both Clubs came out of their groups undefeated, with Inter finishing Group D in second place behind Real Sociedad with three wins and three draws and Atlético finishing Group E in first with four wins and two draws.

Currently, both are favorites to compete for their league trophies, with Inter Milan leading Serie A with 41 points while Atlético fights for the top spot with 35 points (behind second place Real Madrid and current league leaders Girona FC).

Real Madrid vs RB Leipzig

Fourteen-time Champions League winner Real Madrid could definitely have an easy route to the Round of 8 or a tough one against RB Leipzig, as the German side have proven before to be a threat during these competitions. However, Real would be led by English superstar Jude Bellingham and currently in-form Rodrygo, as both players have had stellar games in the past group stage matches.

So far, Bellingham has registered four goals and three assists while Rodrygo has put up three goals and two assists in Champions League play.

PSG vs Real Sociedad

The Spanish side Real Sociedad might be favorites to move on to the Round of 8, ahead of its meeting between Paris Saint-Germain in the Round of 16. The Spaniards have been arguably the stand-out performer of the tournament so far, finishing undefeated and top of their group.

PSG, meanwhile, barely qualified for the Champions League Round of 16 after failing to win any of its last three group stage matches. They finished their group tied in second and was able to secure qualification due to goal differences between AC Milan.

So, in other words, these two upcoming fixtures will be interesting to watch as it could possibly serve as a test for the French side in trying to establish themselves as a top Club in Europe.
